Why it matters
In low beam headlights a driver sees a pedestrian in dark clothing from about 30 metres and in light clothing from 40 to 50 metres. With a reflector the pedestrian is visible from 130 to 150 metres, and from 300 to 350 metres in high beam. At 50 km/h a car needs about 28 metres to stop on a dry road.
Requirements for a branded reflector
- CE marking and EN 17353:2020. A reflector is personal protective equipment and must meet the standard. Ask for the declaration of conformity.
- User instructions. Instructions must come with the reflector, for example on the pack or a label, and in Estonian when sold in Estonia.
- The logo does not cover the reflective surface. Print reduces reflection. The logo usually goes on the edge, a designated area or a separate label.

How to wear and care for it
- Hang the reflector 50 to 80 cm above the ground, at headlight height.
- Wear it on the side facing traffic. Several reflectors are best: front, back and sides.
- Reflectors wear out. Replace a scratched or dull one.
- Do not machine wash a reflector. Wipe a dirty one with a damp cloth.
