Embroidery, screen or transfer: logos on clothing

On clothing a logo has to survive washing, stretching and sunlight. The right technique depends on the fabric, the quantity and how many colours the logo has. Among our suppliers over 2,100 models offer transfer printing, many of them textiles and bags.

Three techniques

EmbroideryThe logo is stitched in thread. The most premium and durable, suits polos, caps, jackets and towels. Fine details under 5 mm do not show. Priced on request.

Screen printInk is pressed through a screen. Cheapest for large runs and large areas, each colour printed separately. Suits T-shirts and fabric bags.

Transfer printThe logo is printed on film and heat-pressed onto the fabric. Suits small runs and colourful logos, with a low set-up.

Digital print on fabricA full-colour image printed straight onto the fabric. Suits photos and complex designs, best on light cotton.

Dark fabric and colours

A light or coloured logo on a dark shirt needs an underbase, a white layer under the logo, or the colour looks dull. In screen printing that means one extra colour and extra set-up. In transfer printing the underbase is usually part of the film.

Sizes and quantity

A clothing order is split across sizes, but the print price is usually based on the total quantity, not per size. Collect sizes from the team before ordering so nothing is left over or missing. Keep the number of colours low, as each extra colour in screen printing means a new set-up.

What is the most durable logo on clothing?

Embroidery. Thread does not wear off in the wash or crack like printing ink.

Can a small quantity be printed too?

Yes, transfer printing has a low set-up and works for tens of pieces.

Do all sizes cost the same?

The print price is usually the same. Larger sizes such as 3XL can have a higher product price.
